5/30/2023 0 Comments Way to the woods reviewThe score is just as sprightly and lyrics as topsy-turvy as they have always been, but a unique joy comes from watching these Broadway powerhouses earnestly surrender to Sondheim’s playfulness. (Creel as Cinderella’s pursuer is given more to work with than Henry as Rapunzel’s.) Brian d’Arcy James and Sara Bareilles meld crystalline voices as the Baker and his wife. Gavin Creel and Joshua Henry go tête-à-tête for the most vain prince. Cole Thompson is a cherubic Jack, Aymee Garcia his worrisome mother. Phillipa Soo is Cinderella - beautiful, clumsy, warm to humans and birds alike. Julia Lester is innocent with a violent streak, excitable but also deadpan, every contradicting choice a hysterical delight. Miller is in masterful control of the story, the audience and her own spidery, swaggerful performance. Patina Miller as the Witch is so good that I want to add a “t” to the end of the adjective. The upside, of course, is we are that much closer to the best cast on Broadway. Often the actors are cramped downstage, stunted by linear movements in and out of each other’s storyline. In true Encores! fashion, the show takes place on a largely bare-bones set that’s adorned only slightly with three miniature suspended buildings and foliage-less trees. However, those expecting the other half of the stage to materialize lush forests or glimmering castles will be disappointed. Instrumentalists usher Sondheim’s music to life from upstage, cloaked in black like a shadow of the actors before them. Even the Encores! orchestra reprises its role under the baton of Rob Berman. This “Into the Woods” is lifted from the 2022 New York City Center Encores! production. In pursuit of happily ever after, the line between right and wrong blurs. Each of the characters has desires (children, wealth, marriage) that they spend the first act acquiring and the second lamenting because of the ways they obtained or abused them (deceit, theft, betrayal). A mélange of well-known Grimm Brothers stories (“Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Red Riding Hood”) intersect to form a new tale. Those unfamiliar with the show’s plot are likely familiar with its source material. She is no longer the “bad guy” who my binary memories are tempted to paint her as. The Witch is more complicated this go around: not a looming figure haunting the other characters’ tales, but a passionate mother with the vengeance of any woman who has been wronged. As an adult, it threw that same lesson away. As a child, “Into the Woods” taught me the difference between good and evil. The only difference is my interpretation of it. James Theatre, but Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s mythical musical remains a delight. There is at least a decade’s worth of distance between those early viewings and the current Broadway production mounted at the St. Like most folks who lay claim to being a former theater kid, a solid portion of my childhood was spent watching a grainy PBS taping of “Into the Woods” on YouTube. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Harmony healthcare“We’re honored to have worked with Harmony on this momentous transaction,” added Bhavin Patel, Clearsight Co-founder and Managing Director. Order them towards an objective and they’ll take a direct route through any buildings in their path, dispensing with wayfinding to carve a neat furrow of destruction through rows of terraced houses, sending bricks and debris flying for miles. Order them to hunker down and they’ll draw in their vast appendages to become impenetrable rocket silos. The very biggest machines are a spectacle, like IKEA warehouses that have grown a pair of legs, cumbersome and absolutely thrilling to command. If you’ve ever stood within two metres of somebody who has played a strategy game before, you’ll have absorbed this level of knowledge through psychic osmosis.īut then there are the superstar units, the building-sized, end-game mechs. Beneath the charismatic cast of incongruous bipedal tanks, Iron Harvest is fun but uncomplicated. Grenadiers can flush enemy units out from behind cover, engineers can repair units and construct barracks to produce more. There are rocket units who can take on mechs by attacking their weak point, which in the grand old tradition of giant-robot-construction is positioned on the rear. There’s a mech that looks like a friendly grain silo with metal spider legs and gatling guns for hands, which carves up any soldiers who’ve wandered out of cover. Paper comes to the rescue of scissors, only to need rescuing from a rock.Įach unit has a clearly signposted strength and weakness. In this manner, skirmishes can slow right down and can become battles of attrition once a couple of units dig their heels in. Individual squads are hardy and able to take a thorough beating given sufficient cover, allowing you the opportunity to send countermeasures to the rescue, usually in the form of a slightly larger or faster robot than the one your opponent’s got. The game handles like Company Of Heroes - which Iron Harvest is consciously inspired by - or a slowed-down Command & Conquer, or any mid-2000s RTS where the camera perspective doesn’t pull back very far, and your focus is on manoeuvring units into tactically advantageous positions rather than surveying the entire battlefield at once. Missions vary in scope from chaperoning your hero and a few handfuls of units from one side of the map to the other, using the cover of sandbags, smashed up buildings and fallen logs to navigate around and flank enemy soldiers, to large scale battles in which opposing bases are constructed and resource-generating sites repeatedly change hands. A single player campaign focuses first on the story of Anna, the leader of a bunch of Polanian rebels, as she and her best friend, a grizzly bear who can breathe ursine healing gas on injured units, defends her homeland from a Rusviet plot to destabilise the delicate peace treaty between the two nations. In contrast to the vastness of the machines, the scale of the battles in Iron Harvest feels decidedly personal. Iron Harvest conveys the look and feel of Rozalski’s fantasy universe, tapping into the sense of awe and privilege real Europeans must have felt when they witnessed the first ever tank trundling into their town to obliterate the post office. These are janky, diesel-powered mechs that look like they’re about to rattle themselves to pieces sooner than stroll into battle. Not the pristine, precision-engineered war machines of modern science-fiction, with all of their ball bearings and cupholders and heated seats, but noisy, oily, juddering wrecks that stink of WD40 and tremble like nervous metal greyhounds. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Inspired by the work of Polish artist Jakub Rozalski, who paints smokey pastoral scenes loomed over by grey machines lumbering across hazy horizons, the game depicts a world in which the mechanization of warfare didn’t stop with tanks and railguns, but instead progressed to iron mech suits and industrial-era megazords. Iron Harvest is an alternate history RTS in which the great empires of the early 20th century invented giant stompy robots with machine guns for heads and spinning blades for arms. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Man jumps off newport bridge 2021However, with President Biden’s recent $2 trillion infrastructure plan, the passage of a bill entitled “Bridging the Gaps for Safety” in the RI Assembly, which calls for bridge barriers on the Sakonnet River, Mount Hope, Newport Pell, and Jamestown Verrazzano bridges, could become a reality. No doubt, bridge netting or barriers have been discussed for decades. What is more, 70 percent of those who attempt suicide are not receiving mental healthcare at the time. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 90 percent of those who completed suicide had a diagnosable mental health condition at the time of death. It’s time we provided a “lockbox” for our bridges, especially if that buys someone more time to live, be helped and treated for mental illness. While prevention coalitions across the state have publicized the need for lock boxes for medicines in homes, and under Rhode Island law, licensed firearms dealers are required to sell handguns with trigger locks, our bridges have nothing more than a warning sign and Suicide Hotline phone number. Similarly, if someone spends time at home, and is distraught enough, an unlocked firearms or medicine cabinet becomes an easy temptation. Around here, bridges dominate our landscape. However, it’s the convenience or accessibility factor that is paramount. Certainly, they know firearms have a high rate of lethality. They operate under the notion that pills won’t work, but jumping will. They prefer to stay put, and yet they may consider jumping off the bridge, if distraught enough.Įxperts say that jumping from bridges-like guns-is reserved for those who are determined to die. The paradox is that people around here don’t enjoy crossing bridges. They are convenient and link our islands together. It may seem obvious to anyone who lives in Newport County as to why a person would contemplate jumping off a bridge. When it comes to suicide in the U.S., the most common means is by firearms, which accounts for about 55 percent of the suicide deaths, followed by suffocation, poisoning, and jumping. Three people lost their lives jumping off Newport County bridges and 27 lost their lives in the past nine years. Bridge jumping is a relatively rare occurrence, but not in Newport County and not in the past couple of months. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Any video downloader and converterAlso, it allows you to pause and resume your downloads if you need more connections to do other important tasks. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Sleepyhead cpapNow a days I rarely yawn in the car and my commute is usually 60-70 minutes one-way. Occasionally having to literally slap myself to keep more nodding off at the wheel. I used to yawn all the time on my 20-30 minute commute home from the previous job. You can review all the data points per day if you so choose The complete absence of airflow through the nose and mouth, despite an effort to breathe as measured at the chest and abdomen, is called an apnea event. The machine stores numerous metrics which can be used to gauge the effectiveness of the therapy itself. The partial collapse of the airway is called a hypopnea. While working to prevent events the CPAP machine also tracks the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) which records the number of times per hour of sleep that your airway partially or completely collapses, leading to a brief arousal or a drop in blood oxygen levels. There are a few weeks there were I had to forgo my nightly therapy. Why not 356+ days of data? When you have a bad head cold that leaves you congested it’s difficult to wear the full mask comfortably. You can see in the figure above that I have 344 days of data. Thanks to a piece of open source software called SleepyHead written by Mark Watkins I can explore all those data points. I eventually became curious as to what data my physician was looking at and why couldn’t I explore that data myself. When I went to see my physician I would bring the SD card that fits inside my Phillips Respironics System One. I’ve been a hose head for more than a year now and the therapy has definitely helped me although the wife tells me I still occasionally snore. 5/30/2023 0 Comments One switch car rental"If for some reason the other driver is unable to fulfill their obligations, MirrorTrip will still make sure a car is available, and you still won't incur any one-way drop-off penalties." What you get when you rent with MirrorTrip "On the other side of the coin though, once you've paid with MirrorTrip, your trip is guaranteed," says Griffin. That's mostly to ensure both drivers show up and honor their contracts. MirrorTrip's rentals are prepaid and non-refundable. All you have to do at the rental location is sign your own contract, show your license, get in the car - and drive." "Once the booking is confirmed, it makes a unified payment on behalf of both of them to the rental company. "MirrorTrip acts as a financial escrow on behalf of both drivers," explains Griffin. MirrorTrip creates a separate contract for each driver, so there's no chance of shared liability. How MirrorTrip differs from a regular rentalĪfter the initial matching process with MirrorTrip, the experience feels a lot like renting a two-way rental. Griffin and his co-founder developed a system that paired a one-way driver with a returning driver. "After Googling it to confirm that it was a problem that others were experiencing, I was excited to see a blog post with hundreds of commiserators commenting on some of the most popular blog articles."īack home, the idea for MirrorTrip solidified. "On the home stretch, the penny dropped for the MirrorTrip idea," he says. To avoid the fee, the couple decided to drive several inconvenient loops around southern Europe. But it cost even more than he expected - the going rate was 1,500 euros for the drop-off fee alone. "From previous experience, I knew a one-way rental from France to Spain would be pricey," he says. He and his wife were about to rent a car for a one-way road trip through France and Spain. The idea for MirrorTrip came to Griffin on his summer vacation to Europe in 2016. In the fleet world, we're seeing how sophisticated algorithms are being used to make back-end processes more efficient." How MirrorTrip started "It alleviates the steep drop fee while relieving the company's labor to transfer the car. "The business model seems to benefit both the rental company and the renter," he says. "I think a one-way car rental is a great concept and have recommended MirrorTrip to family and friends," he says.Ĭhris Brown, editor of Auto Rental News, an industry publication, says MirrorTrip could eventually solve the car rental drop-off problem. Filkow estimated that by matching his itinerary to another driver heading in the other direction, he cut $1,000 from a typical one-way rental cost. "The reservation process was simple and straightforward," he says.īut the best part of the experience was the savings. "A great solution"Ĭolin Filkow, a retired music industry executive from Calgary, was in the market for a one-way rental from Vancouver to Calgary when he found MirrorTrip. "It's a new concept, and for them a potential edge in order to make car rentals price competitive with other intercity travel options such as bus, train, carpooling, and short-haul flights," says Griffin. You can book a MirrorTrip reservation with Hertz in western Canada, but there are plans to expand its technology nationally throughout the U.S. MirrorTrip is available as an app (iOS and Android). "The second driver returns the car to where it started from after the first driver has finished with it," he says. Griffin said the solution was to match renters with other people driving in the opposite direction. "We created it to solve a long-lived problem that my co-founders and I had run into many times before - the one-way dropoff fee that rental companies normally charge you if you want to pick a car up in one city and drop it off in another," he told me. MirrorTrip, the brainchild of serial tech entrepreneur Reece Griffin, represents a new kind of car-sharing he calls "ride switching." (It's just one of many car rental problems I deal with as a consumer advocate.) What is MirrorTrip? So car rental companies charge extra for a one-way rental, effectively discouraging the practice. Fleet management systems aren't designed to find another driver who is willing to return the car. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Fluid image bootstrap tutorialWhen set to 'true', makes the image corners slightly rounded.
